good morning to everyone except covid-19

I had a dragoncon dream last night. It was dragoncon 2021 and I was so relieved they still had the convention despite coronavirus. And then I woke up sad.

Chase and I took Friday off work and went to early vote.

I feel like I’m the only person on social media without a cute mask. I’ve made a couple of masks but I find them too hard to breath in (and they tend to suck up against my face when I’m breathing which makes me go slightly panicky). I keep meaning to make a really simple 1 layer cover for these white ones we have but I haven’t yet.

Also just going to go on the record to say that I absolutely effing hate wearing masks. I keep seeing people say they enjoy it/excited to work masks into costumes, etc. I hate them. So so so much. I can’t wait for this to be over.

Since we did early voting at the Agricenter, we went next door to the farmer’s market to buy a pumpkin. We ended up with a pumpkin AND a ton of flowers.

These just barely fit in my car.

For now we’ve got them still in their pots on either side of our walkway. Eventually we’re going to plant them somewhere, I’m not sure where yet. It depends on what they look like when they’re not blooming.

Also bought this inflatable on amazon last week:

I loved the cat sitting on the tombstone though I haaaate the font/text LMAO. We have plans to try to paint over it and design new vinyl lettering for it next year… but it’s actually kinda starting to grow on me… it’s kinda adorable how bad it is.

Exciting pin mail! I haven’t bought any new pins in ages but I saw these from Squadron Goals and had to have them. Also got sticker versions too.

Speaking of stickers, I had a few folks ask me to do stickers of the dressform art I did for my costume pages, so I threw them on redbubble. Only included the things I thought people would want/were eye-catching. May go through and add some hero stuff too later.

And speaking of pins, I bought a new pin board the other day that’s supposed to arrive today. I’m excited. Half of my pins live on an ugly corkboard I don’t even have hanging up – it’s tucked behind my couch in my sewing room. I can finally have them out and displayed.

Now on to Jupiter progress…

Finished sewing early last week.

She’s cute.

So last week this was my to-do list – I’ll update each section:

-Get a new ponytail.
I did go get a new ponytail. Got it home and opened it and discovered the top part that was hidden under the cardboard was black, it was an ombre into a reddish-brown so the first 2 inches were black. You couldn’t tell without opening it. ARGH. So I dug around and eventually pulled the ponytail off my Belle wig (I use it for the bun) – it’s also what I used when I shot Eternal Sailor Jupiter and SeraMyu Sailor Jupiter back in 2012/2013, but I didn’t think it would match since I’m slowly sliding back into quarantine hair. But it did! So I’m using that.

-3D Print tiara, paint
Ended up not having to paint that because we ordered a gold filament. But the 3d tiara file we had off thingiverse was MASSIVE. Sized it down to fit the width of my head, but when we printed it, the HEIGHT of it was almost as tall as my whole forehead. And it extended around the head too far. So Chase tweaked it, reprinted it, and the new one worked much better.

-Make neckband
Done-zo

-Add snaps for attaching the collar
Done-zo

-Finish the front bow
Done-zo although one of the lower portions of the front bow wants to angle upwards, so I may need to take it apart and readjust at some point.

-Paint brooch setting, attach gem (the gem is one of the things that was supposed to be here Saturday. Better be here today)
Painted, gem finally showed up Monday, got it glued on. I put some sticky back velcro on the back of it, and sewed velcro to the bow for attachment.

Paint belt pieces, attach gems
Ended up reprinting the belt pieces, too, in the gold filament. Chase got the whole thing assembled Saturday. It’s so cute.

-re-iron skirt pleats
Miss me with that boring shit

Sunday was photoshoot day!

I was really torn on wearing shapewear under this. I did a test run with and without Saturday night and took photos to compare… I like how it smoothed my waist in a hair but the shapewear I have has these huge seams in the front that were really visible under the leotard, as you can see in the photo above. I ended up wearing it for the photoshoot, but I may skip it when I go take pics at my parents house next weekend – sitting here looking at the comparison photos full size on my desktop computer and they’re pretty much the same. I think any difference is all in my head.

Also shot:

Dapper Bespin Leia

Merida with the new wig

Aurora with the updates

And Carrie

I had wanted to shoot Raddus but we didn’t have time – we gave ourselves til noon to shoot and I was finishing up Carrie at 11:40. So I’ll do her next time.

I had to do a few small things to Aurora to get her ready for the shoot – fixing the necklace, and sewing the crown back on the wig namely. I got the wig out to sew the crown back on and discovered….

Do you see how exactly half the curls have fallen out?

When I noticed this I kinda sat there staring at it, totally bewildered. And then I realized… I know what happened. After I did some videos of this a couple of months ago, I ended up setting the wig on a wighead on the top shelf in my bathroom, instead of storing it away in a box, because I knew I wanted to shoot it soon (also need to do a dressing video with it).

So it was sitting on this shelf, with half of the hair kinda hanging down and the other half tucked behind it against the wall. And we had Kevin last week. Kevin takes really long, steamy showers. Everytime I’d go in to pick up after him, the mirror would be totally fogged over, things slightly damp from the steam. So — I think the part of the wig that was hanging down essentially got steamed straight LMAO. And the part that was tucked up against the wall was protected. So I had to recurl the whole thing.

Once I finished sewing on Jupiter I finally got back around to Arwen.

I finished the beads up the center of each leaf on one sleeve. Now I’m doing the sequins on the vines…after this photo I stopped and got different, darker thread that blends in with the fabric better.

I’ve still got to find smaller beads for the smaller veins of the leaves. The notes from the alleycatscratch site say they’re all bugle beads, but I couldn’t find bugle beads locally so I had used these round beads instead – and I think they’re fine for the main part of the leave, but too big for the smaller veins (i think they’d overwhelm the shape). It’d be nice to actually find bugle beads for that part but I swear everytime I go look at beads at michaels or hobby lobby, either they’re totally picked over or the aisle is so crowded I’m like… nah I’ll use what I have at home. LOL.

(And I literally just paused while writing this and bought some bugle beads on amazon)

I’m not in any rush on this project. Just leisurely working on it… but it’d be nice to have it done before the end of the year to count towards my 2020 costumes.

We had to re-rent Lost Boys because we didn’t have time to finish it. Just have to say that movie is NOT what I had in my head LOL. You know how you just make an assumption about what some piece of media is liked based on your friends who like it? That’s what I’d done with Lost Boys. And it was totally not that LOL.

My choice this week was The Conjuring, which Chase is not enjoying because it is scary LOL. I told him my choice for Halloween weekend would be Edward Scissorhands and he said that was “TAME” so now my choice for Halloween weekend is Hereditary.
